It helps to stay in control of our weight to stay fit and look youthful and is a proven factor in preventing illneses such as diabetes and heart disease in later life. Yet so many of us have begun exercise programs, only to feel guilty and lazy because we give up after the first few weeks.

But what if the problem wasn’t laziness at all, just people doing the wrong sort of exercise for their needs and personality? One way to successfully match people with exercise is through the ancient art of astrology. In astrology the 12 zodiac signs are grouped into four elements – earth, air, fire and water. These represent physical and personality traits, and were the core of the four ‘humours’ on which Western medicine was based for nearly 2000 years.

Each element has certain characteristics that influence the reasons why people exercise and why they lose interest. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

Approach to exercise: Serious and methodical by nature, Earth signs view exercise as a sensible way to maintain health and fitness, rather than a source of fun. Fortunately, staying power is their greatest asset once they have established an exercise routine. All three Earth signs conscientiously plod away until their goals have been achieved.

Never beginning exercise due to a lack of motivation or an overloaded schedule. Also treating exercise as an unwelcome chore that must be done perfectly.
Best Exercises
Taurus people thrive on the beauty and psychological effects of nature, so bushwalking and strenuous gardening bring health to both body and soul. Virgos, meanwhile, need something that can fit in with their often tightly pressed schedules, so incidental exercise including walking, taking the stairs and sweeping rather than using a leaf blower etc, can all bring results. Rock climbing, either mountaineering or indoors, holds a natural astrological appeal for Capricorns, while rollerblading reminds them to play. All Earth signs like to see improvement quickly and hate wasting time, which makes intense exercise classes and workouts very attractive.

Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Emotional and sensitive to hurt, Water-sign people have a tendency to use exercise as a form of self punishment, particularly after binging on fattening comfort foods when upset. They often find it difficult to stick with fixed exercise programs, as their moods and emotional needs can change from week to week.

Being derailed by emotional drama can often conflict with the need for consistent exercise. Moodiness and negative self-talk can undermine motivation – ‘What’s the point?’

Cancer people often feel more comfortable in their home environment than anywhere else, making wiifit and home gyms a suitable choice. Scorpios love the thrills found in competitive or dangerous sports, particularly those involving water such as whitewater rafting. Swimming is good for Pisces, as they can use the time to unwind mentally while they strengthen and tone their bodies. All Water sign share a natural affinity with aquatic sports and the need to retreat and regain their emotional balance from time to time.

Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

For social butterflies like Air sign, exercise is often just another way to have fun and increase their already large circle of friends. They are the lifeblood of team sports, but unfortunately find it nearly impossible to exercise on their own unless there is a great deal of variety or a strong intellectual component to keep them interested.

Restlessness and a low boredom threshold make commitment to regular exercise difficult. This group probably has more unused gym memberships than any other.

For Geminis the combined mental and physical challenge found in orienteering is very seductive, while the mixed teams in touch football give perennially romantic Librans a chance to flirt as they pass the ball. For Aquarians, an unusual sport like Ultimate Frisbee is excellent, as it is innovative and flexible and can be played at a moments notice. At the gym, circuit training and attending group classes with friends will Air signs stay motivated. Jogging or riding a bike to visit friends is effective and easy exercise.

Team sports of all varieties are suitable for Air signs, as the continuing social contact and the chance to make new friends is great motivation to make them turn up week after week.

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Approach to Exercise
Competitive and with energy to burn, Fire sign are often enthusiastic sports people who enjoy exercise for its own sake. Their fiery natures create a tendency towards being hot tempered and impatient, so regular exercise provides a safe and constructive way to let off steam and unwind.
Barriers to Exercise
Their sometimes over-competitive and aggressive behaviour can create difficulties with team sports. Sudden enthusiasms for intense fitness routines can be difficult to sustain.
Best Exercises
Ruled by war-like planet Mars, Aries people are naturally suited towards martial arts and those based on fighting like boxercise. Many Leos are closet dancing queens, making regular dancing classes an enjoyable way to stay fit and flexible. Sagittarians often find that their hips and thighs are trouble areas so should head to the gym and hit the step classes and stairmasters. Sports where individuals compete against nature, and endurance challenges are well suited to the Fire sign temperament. Traditionally masculine sports such as rugby and body building may appeal strongly.
